About Janet

Janet Laugharne is a poet and prose writer who lives in Wales,UK. She grew up with her sister Rebecca Hughes by the beautiful Mawddach Estuary in Gwynedd where their mother was an artist and father a full-time writer, Cledwyn Hughes.

Janet is fascinated by words, their sounds and meaning, and this is a constant thread through her wide and varied writing life; as an academic and teacher, poet and fiction writer; and when co-writing as J.L. Harland with Jacqueline Harrett.

A love for language

Alongside her love of words in English, Janet has a fascination with other languages.

She speaks Welsh, having learnt as an adult, and (rusty) French and German. Her PhD was a study of the stories about language she collected with Welsh/English bilingual children – a research passion. As an academic Janet has worked on the craft of words for many years, alongside her ongoing personal enjoyment in creative writing. ‘Retirement’ has allowed more opportunity to write and publish poetry and fiction.

In 2022 she was runner-up in the erbacce-prize for poetry from an international field of over 15,000 submissions. Her first poetry collection is ‘Greenscapes . . . and other poems’.
